The Mermaid Inn: Where the Past Won’t Check Out
On storybook Mermaid Street, The Mermaid Inn has welcomed travelers since the 1400s. Beneath it, Norman cellars date to 1156. Guests and staff tell of chilly rooms, moving furniture, and the famous “duel” apparition said to replay in the Elizabethan Chamber. Smugglers from the Hawkhurst Gang once used the inn; some believe a murdered maid still lingers by the fireplaces.
