Festivals in Rye - a year of celebration

Rye isn’t just charming , it’s alive with festivals! Throughout the year, this historic riverside town becomes a stage for music, food, arts, and community tradition. Wherever you are in the calendar, there’s something happening in Rye to discover, celebrate and enjoy.

Winter & early Spring

Each February the Rye Bay Scallop Festival draws seafood lovers from near and far, with restaurants across the region showcasing the local catch in creative dishes and tasting events.

Summer highlights

When summer arrives, Rye’s musical pulse quickens. The Rye Bay Jazz & Blues Festival late in August draws jazz, blues and world‑music fans to venues around town, from street buskers to headline gigs. The town’s cobbled streets and historic walls provide an atmospheric backdrop for these performances.

Arts, Literature & Culture

In the autumn months, the Rye Arts Festival offers a rich mix of music, literary talks, theatre and galleries - a perfect time to experience Rye’s creative spirit and for families and foodies alike, events such as the quirky “Pirates & Smugglers” themed days or game‑dining weeks add fun and flavour.

Food & Wine

In September, Rye comes alive with the Rye Harvest Wine & Food Fair  - a celebration of the very best of food, drink and local produce from within 40 miles of town. The event showcases award‑winning vineyards, distilleries and brewers from East Sussex and Kent, along with artisan food stalls, live cookery demos and music. With a strong focus on sustainability and provenance, it’s the perfect way to taste the region and experience the heart of Rye’s foodie spirit.

Tradition & Community

Rye also honours its heritage. One of the most evocative nights is Rye Bonfire Night in November - a torch‑lit parade, bonfire, fireworks and boat burning on the town salts evoke centuries of local tradition.

To Note:  Sadly, the Festival of The Sea no longer happens - it stopped a number of years ago.  In 2025, the Christmas in Rye Festival was sadly cancelled, but we hope it will come back in 2026.

Plan ahead & join the fun

Whether you’re planning a weekend trip or a longer stay, aligning your visit with one of Rye’s festivals makes the experience extra special. Each event brings a fresh energy to the town and the warmth of a community coming together.

From seafood feasts to jazz riffs, from art installations to bonfire brilliance, Rye’s festival calendar offers something for everyone.
