In 1922 E.F.Benson published the first of the Tilling novels set in Rye, after he had been living in Rye for about three years. From then on, until his death in 1940, the further four novels set in Rye were published, the last in 1939.
The E.F. Benson Society aims to study the life of Benson and also his very interesting family. The Society was founded in 1985 and publishes an annual journal, the Dodo, and many other books about this fascinating man and family. The society holds an annual Rye Day, the second Saturday in July, a Talk in London in late May and a trip to a place of Benson interest in the autumn.
In Rye, the Society has tours round E.F.Benson's Rye looking at the houses in the books, the places where many of the stories take place and also the Benson interest in the church. The tour ends at Lamb House or Mallards, Benson's home, which will be open. These walks are led by Allan Downend, the Society's Secretary.
The Walks take about 1.5 hours and start at 2pm from Benson Look-out on East Cliff on Wednesdays and the first and third Saturday in the month. The cost is £6.50 per person. For private walks at other times please contact 01797 223114. For further information telephone Rye Tourist Information Centre on 01797 226696 or visit the Society's website www.efbensonsociety.org to join or find out more.
